Seagrass development in terrigenous‐influenced inner ramp settings during the middle Eocene (Urbasa–Andia Plateau, Western Pyrenees, North Spain)

چکیده
Since their first occurrence in the late Cretaceous, seagrasses have played a major role carbonate production and sedimentation across shallow-water nearshore environments, sustaining prolific factory contributing to sediment accumulation through combination of baffling trapping effects. Most reported Palaeogene seagrass occurrences developed oligo−mesotrophic shallow warm-water habitats are characterized by distinct associations small larger benthic foraminifers adapted low terrigenous influence. This study describes number episodes interbedded Bartonian (middle Eocene) San Fausto–Lazkua area (Navarra region, North Spain), within inner-ramp succession that, spite being deposited under general transgressive conditions, was highly influenced supply from adjacent land. Up twelve different bed intervals occur cyclical manner with high-energy siliciclastics inner ramp bioclastic carbonates rich mesophotic−oligophotic heterozoan biota (red algae, echinoderms, bryozoans). Seagrass deposits exhibit typical unsorted textures, abundant bioturbation moderate high content, comprise characteristic skeletal association epiphytic foraminifers, red algae and, most particularly, encrusting acervulinids, commonly hooked tubular growth forms. abundance suspension-feeders relative autotrophs mixotrophs may be indicative temperate waters, although taxonomic diversity foraminiferal assemblages both non-seagrass embedding supports interpretation shallow, conditions. The studied provide evidence that siliciclastic associated nutrient input determine temperate-like settings, analogous extensive modern shallow-tropical environments. Thus, identification correct past seagrass-vegetated environments crucial for reconstructing palaeoecological conditions ancient shallow-marine Therefore, comparison carbonate-dominated mixed terrigenous−carbonate volumetrically less important, presenting more irregular, patchy distribution, assemblage dominated heterotrophs, regardless water temperature.

Rapid Fluctuations in Mid-Latitude Siliceous Plankton Production during the Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (ODP Site 1051, Western North Atlantic)
The Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO; ~ 40 million years ago [Ma]) is one of the most prominent transient global warming events in the Paleogene. Although the event is well documented in geochemical and isotopic proxy records at many locations, the marine biotic response to the MECO remains poorly constrained. We present new high-resolution, quantitative records of siliceous microplankton a...
متن کاملHost-parasite relationships of Zootoca vivipara (Sauria: Lacertidae) in the Pyrenees (North Spain).
The helminths infesting the common lizard, Zootoca vivipara (Jacquin, 1787), were studied with special attention to the relations between the number of nematodes, Oswaldocruzia filiformis (Goeze, 1782), and the size, sex and age class of the host. The possible seasonality of the parasite intensity and the relationship with the feeding habits of the host were also tested. Helminth infracommuniti...
متن کاملUrticaceae pollen concentration in the atmosphere of North Western Spain.
Plants of the Urticaceae family can develop into a pest on soils enriched with nitrogen. Urticaceae pollen is a biohazard because it elicits severe pollinosis. Pollen grains were sampled by using a Lanzoni seven-day-recording trap from February 1995-December 2000 in the atmosphere of the city of Ponferrada (Leon, North Western Spain). The Spearman test was used to analyse the statistical correl...

Article history: Received 11 October 2016 Accepted 5 January 2017 Available online 14 January 2017 The Siletz terrane, a predominantly mafic accreted oceanic terrane, is located in the Cascadia forearc region of Oregon, Washington and Vancouver Island. The terrane represents a late Palaeocene–Eocene large igneous province that consists of pillow lavas, massive flows and intrusive sheets. Previo...
متن کاملStable Eocene Magnetization Carried by Magnetite and Iron Sulphides in Marine Marls (pamplona-arguis Formation, Southern Pyrenees, Northern Spain)
In order to establish the magnetic carriers and assess the reliability of previous paleomagnetic results obtained for Eocene marine marls from the south Pyrenean basin, we carried out a combined paleoand rock-magnetic study of the Pamplona-Arguis Formation, which crops out in the western sector of the southern Pyrenees (N Spain). The unblocking temperatures suggest that the characteristic reman...
